In the original comics some time around the '40s, Ma Hunkel was a working mom whose costume consisted of longjohns and a big cooking pot on her head. She adopted the identity of the Red Tornado to fight local criminals in NY after stopping a robbery in her store which led to her kids being kidnapped. Inspired by her son's admiration for the Green Lantern she donned an outfit of similar colors. Ma Hunkel's popularity was such that she was given a cameo in the first adventure of the JSA, visiting the JSA's headquarters but immediately left after her pants split without having the chance to apply for membership. |
